In essence, the entrepreneursâ relief rules can appear deceptively simple; it can be dangerous to assume that all business assets qualify for the relief and this should be regularly checked. In addition, there are ways in which the relief can be maximised with forward planning. With the recent increase in the top rate of capital gains tax to 28%, it is a valuable relief and worth arranging your business affairs to ensure it is maximised.
Monday, June 13th, 2011 Read MoreEntrepreneursâ relief can offer significant tax savings when exiting a business either completely or partially. However to get the maximum benefit of this relief, it is important to think ahead and plan accordingly. There are a number of qualifying criteria to consider depending on your individual circumstances, and action should be taken as soon as possible to avoid disqualification. In most cases, entrepreneurs wishing to use this relief need to review their position at least a year before a sale to ensure they qualify.

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 Read MoreIf youâre a Sunday Times reader, you could not fail to notice the article in January about footballers and their tax affairs. This highlighted how many footballers have been avoiding the 50% tax rate by using image rights companies into which the majority of their earnings are paid and then using their directorâs loan account to withdraw income. Apparently, it is possible to pay a rate of just 2% by following this strategy. We wish it were that straightforward!

âFlippingââ a property became widely known as a property tax planning tactic when the MPsâ expenses scandal was in full swing. In addition to claiming for all sorts of expenses, it was discovered that MPs were avoiding capital gains tax on second homes by alternating their living arrangements between properties owned, in some cases spending just one week a year in any one property.

Business owners with a limited company can also claim for a home office by ârentingâ the designated room at market rates. They may also be able offset this profit against any property investment losses and therefore reduce corporation tax.

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 Read MoreHMRC has been criticized heavily in recent months for a range of internal failings and so at first glance the announcement last week, that it will be introducing a new role of customer coordinator to manage taxpayer relationships, sounded good. However, is this going to create a 3-tier system for taxpayers? And potentially leave those needing the most help with the least support?
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 Read MoreThe weekend papers were full of news about the planned increases to capital gains tax (CGT) announced by the new government. Some commentators have argued that this change has been on the cards for some time, although during the Election campaigning it was only the Lib Dems that formally announced their intentions. Subsequently incorporated into the coalitionâs policies, we can expect CGT rates for top earners to more than double for non business assets and the exemption threshold to be cut from ÂŁ10,100 to between ÂŁ1,000 and ÂŁ2,000.
These changes will be painful, especially since for the past 2 years, the flat rate of 18% has been extremely generous. But given the poor state of the Treasuryâs coffers, the disparity between income and capital tax rates cannot be sustainable.
Thursday, May 27th, 2010 Read MoreLast week, the new Conservative LibDem coalition government was announced amid a flurry of guarded excitement and scepticism. The coalition has been quick to stamp out suggestions that their political differences will be too marked to produce effective financial policy and so far, the speed with which agreements have been reached is impressive and very positive in terms of their quality.
