How to maximise the value of Entrepreneurs’ Relief – part 2

Installment 2 of our focus on entrepreneurs’ relief. In essence, the entrepreneurs’ relief rules can appear deceptively simple; it can be dangerous to assume that all business assets qualify for the relief and this should be regularly checked. In addition, there are ways in which the relief can be maximised with forward planning. With the recent increase in the top rate of capital gains tax to 28%, it is a valuable relief and worth arranging your business affairs to ensure it is maximised.

How can business owners maximise the value of Entrepreneurs’ Relief – Part 1

Entrepreneurs’ relief can offer significant tax savings when exiting a business either completely or partially. However to get the maximum benefit of this relief, it is important to think ahead and plan accordingly. There are a number of qualifying criteria to consider depending on your individual circumstances, and action should be taken as soon as possible to avoid disqualification. In most cases, entrepreneurs wishing to use this relief need to review their position at least a year before a sale to ensure they qualify.

Business owners with a limited company can also claim for a home office by ‘renting’ the designated room at market rates. They may also be able offset this profit against any property investment losses and therefore reduce corporation tax.

Relationship managers combined with tax centre cuts to create uneven playing field

HMRC has been criticized heavily in recent months for a range of internal failings and so at first glance the announcement last week, that it will be introducing a new role of customer coordinator to manage taxpayer relationships, sounded good. However, is this going to create a 3-tier system for taxpayers? And potentially leave those needing the most help with the least support?

CGT shake up requires careful planning for investors

The weekend papers were full of news about the planned increases to capital gains tax (CGT) announced by the new government. Some commentators have argued that this change has been on the cards for some time, although during the Election campaigning it was only the Lib Dems that formally announced their intentions. Subsequently incorporated into the coalition’s policies, we can expect CGT rates for top earners to more than double for non business assets and the exemption threshold to be cut from £10,100 to between £1,000 and £2,000.

These changes will be painful, especially since for the past 2 years, the flat rate of 18% has been extremely generous. But given the poor state of the Treasury’s coffers, the disparity between income and capital tax rates cannot be sustainable.

Coalition tax policies unveiled mark the end of ‘E’ Relief

Last week, the new Conservative LibDem coalition government was announced amid a flurry of guarded excitement and scepticism. The coalition has been quick to stamp out suggestions that their political differences will be too marked to produce effective financial policy and so far, the speed with which agreements have been reached is impressive and very positive in terms of their quality.

Should tax be a cross party issue?

Tax has become very politically motivated, perhaps too much so. Policies are introduced which are ill-researched and potentially damaging. What can be done about this? Should an all-party committee be established to restore political independence to tax policy making? What options exist?

Local Business Owners React to the Pre-Budget Report

We predicted it would be a controversial pre-budget report and it lived up to expectations, with some headline measures that are clearly designed to win over the hearts and minds of Labour’s core supporters. But in spite of this, most observers would agree that overall, it was a pretty good result for Surrey’s business owners.

The Fairness of the Tax System

If ever there was a policy designed to score quick political points it’s the Lib Dem’s suggestion that people with a property over £1m should pay an extra tax of 0.5%. And if there was a move that is more demoralising to tens of thousands of hard working small business owners, I’d be surprised. However, the proposals do raise an interesting question as to the fairness of the tax system and especially the discrepancy between capital and income tax rates, writes Lesley Stalker.

VAT should be ‘scrapped on green appliances’

VAT should be scrapped on energy-efficient household appliances, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said.

In its Pre-Budget submission to the Chancellor, the BRC is calling for the tax to be removed from ‘green’ appliances to help curb carbon emissions and cut fuel bills.

It claims the move, which would cost around £507 million per year in lost VAT receipts, could reduce the UK’s CO 2 output by 1.3 million tonnes each year by 2020.

“Inoculate” your business and save on taxes with key green initiatives

Much continues to be written about green businesses and the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Research has shown its importance for reputation management. In effect, their CSR policies had an “inoculating effect”, creating a “reservoir of goodwill” among stakeholders. In addition to the public relations benefits, the right strategy can also deliver a significant financial advantage as this article will highlight with an overview of the different green tax breaks relevant for small to medium sized businesses.
